Started three years ago, the Academic Mentoring Program is a means to help youth succeed in
school and ultimately attend college. More than 15 tutors from Brown University come to YIA twice a week to work with YIA youth on homework and test-taking strategies. Each youth works one-on-one
with a tutor to complete an Academic Goal Sheet, which helps youth set goals and work plans for
each school semester.

YIA also partners with COLLEGE VISIONS, a rigorous college
placement program. This partnership has been so valuable in helping
our youth access higher education. The intensive program runs for 2
hours every week, helping youth with every imaginable aspect of getting
into college, including: registering for the SAT; completing application
forms; meeting with parents to complete financial aid forms; resolving
issues with grades; and advocating for youth with college admissions reps.
Ninety-eight percent of YIA youth benefit from this program and enter
higher education institutions. Furthermore, many YIA students receive
generous scholarship packages.
